I have always been attracted to characters that involve some sort of element of drama be it lightning, magic, or in this case, fire. Not only because of the visual appeal but because of the challenge in illustrating it. We did this shoot as part of a day of quick shoots to let a group of cosplayers preview their pics before Planet Comicon in Kansas City, February, 2018. Shoots like this are always a challenge because we only have 10 or 15 minutes to shoot with each person in order to work with as many people as possible.

The cosplayer in this shoot is Morgan, Starburst Cosplay, and this is our first shoot of what I hope are many together.

I included an original pic to show how much of the pic was added and how much was thanks to the efforts of Morgan. I started off combining elements from four different hair flips. The Phoenix in the background is illustrated in Photoshop using a tablet and a variety of fire brushes and effects.

Cosplay Group Shoot

As things geared up for the beginning of 2017’s convention season Jo Hartley and I decided to put together a small cosplay group shoot and ended up with a tremendous response. We were expecting five or six people to want to participate but ended up with over 20! We invited Johnny Hackett, Shintaro, and Ed Sandoval to shoot with us to help get everyone as many photos as possible. It also meant shooting a lot faster than we had originally planned, which made things more of a challenge but in the end resulted in quite a few fun shots. Each of the pictures took 15 minutes or less to shoot and in my case were all shot in front of grey paper except for the Batman, Harley, and Joker shot that we took in front of the studio’s elevator.

If I remember right this took about 10 hours from start to finish. The completed version is available in the gallery above.

Dark Hearts

Dark Hearts was a group shoot produced by Romance Productions and held around Valentine’s Day with the original intent of exploring a darker take on the holiday, but everyone pretty much came in with a wide variety of shoot ideas and concepts. We had romantic, dark, costumed, cosplay – a little bit of everything!

Freaks, Flesh, & Filth – “Shudder” Film Short

When I was first invited to this shoot by Mungy The Clown I thought we were doing a little post-Halloween haunted house style shoot, but by the time the actual event day rolled around it ended up being a production day for a film short called “Shudder” by Michael Wulf and Renegade Studios / BlackHeart Films. As they would complete a scene for the film I would step in and shoot a quick still inspired by the scene, and then at the end of the day I grabbed a few more shots of the cast as well. The film included Justin Mitchell, Naomi Brubaker, Alexander Bourne Brotherton, Keri Cole, Nate Karny Cole, Brenna Hoch, Devi Du’Ville, Mike Campbell, and Aaron Wright.
