Wonder Woman versus Ares

This is the first time I have had a chance to work with Jim Bartlett even though I have shot other people in several of his creations. This is a new build for him, based off Ares from the video game “Injustice: Gods Among Us.” Ares is still a work in progress but to date has around 300 hours in crafting the costume!

Also part of the shoot, Hannah Kathleen as Wonder Woman. It is our second time shooting Wonder Woman together and of all her characters so far this is probably my favorite.

In my early days I was very inspired by a handful of artists, especially fantasy artists Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. Frazetta pretty much created the genre and made it mainstream, especially his Death Dealer character, using lighting in a unique way that felt almost cinematic, and Boris manipulated color and motion to bring his fantasy worlds to life.

Since Jim is a huge Frazetta fan I decided to do what I could to incorporate those styles into this photo, taking the photo as far into the fantasy art look as I could while still maintaining the detail and craftsmanship that went into these costumes.

These are my favorites shoots to be a part of, helping to take the characters and immerse them completely into a setting and environment that shows them off in the best way I can.

Cosplay Group Shoot

As things geared up for the beginning of 2017’s convention season Jo Hartley and I decided to put together a small cosplay group shoot and ended up with a tremendous response. We were expecting five or six people to want to participate but ended up with over 20! We invited Johnny Hackett, Shintaro, and Ed Sandoval to shoot with us to help get everyone as many photos as possible. It also meant shooting a lot faster than we had originally planned, which made things more of a challenge but in the end resulted in quite a few fun shots. Each of the pictures took 15 minutes or less to shoot and in my case were all shot in front of grey paper except for the Batman, Harley, and Joker shot that we took in front of the studio’s elevator.

First Mini Group Shoot at Hickory Dickory Studio

In an effort to work with more people this year we have decided to put together several mini-group shoots throughout the year. This was our first one this year, and fortunately Jo Hartley was willing to shoot with me and share her studio space. It was also my first chance to shoot with Sora and Faith, and I have to say I really enjoyed the day!
