Not only because of the visual appeal but because of the challenge in illustrating it. We did this shoot as part of a day of quick shoots to let a group of cosplayers preview their pics before Planet Comicon in Kansas City, February, 2018. Shoots like this are always a challenge because we only have 10 or 15 minutes to shoot with each person in order to work with as many people as possible.

The cosplayer in this shoot is Morgan, Starburst Cosplay, and this is our first shoot of what I hope are many together.

I included an original pic to show how much of the pic was added and how much was thanks to the efforts of Morgan. I started off combining elements from four different hair flips. The Phoenix in the background is illustrated in Photoshop using a tablet and a variety of fire brushes and effects.

The look and feel is almost as important as the characters themselves.

The most challenging thing for me was the weapon’s fire and trying to make it at least similar to the way it looked in the film, and in addition to the shots themselves making sure they functioned as light sources for the rest of the image and had their influence on the elements around them.

Domino Comic Poster https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/04/15/domino-comic-poster/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=domino-comic-poster https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/04/15/domino-comic-poster/#respond Sat, 15 Apr 2017 19:07:50 +0000 https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/?p=866

We decided to do something a bit different and create a few images that we could connect into a page resembling a comic book. It represents a small part of a much larger story, but it was a lot of fun building this tiny piece.

Domino is an interesting character that I was admittedly unfamiliar with until we decided to do this shoot. She is a genetically engineered mutant mercenary with exceptional combat skills, both hand-to-hand and with weapons. She was born with the ability to affect luck around her to her favor. It requires her to take action, for example she could not just stand still while people take shots at her and miraculously avoid being shot, but if she makes an effort to avoid being hit luck will be in her favor and she will survive. We wanted to show this side of her in the pics, first displaying her skills as a sniper and then just narrowly avoiding the return fire as she makes her escape.

If you click on the thumbnail it will open a much larger version.

Ok, maybe not so much the shot with the Beast, but the rest was pretty quick and easy – and a lot of times shoots like that result in some of my favorite pics.

Cosplay Group Shoot https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/02/25/cosplay-group-shoot/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cosplay-group-shoot https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/02/25/cosplay-group-shoot/#respond Sat, 25 Feb 2017 04:03:31 +0000 https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/?p=678 As things geared up for the beginning of 2017’s convention season Jo Hartley and I decided to put together a small cosplay group shoot and ended up with a tremendous response. We were expecting five or six people to want to participate but ended up with over 20! We invited Johnny Hackett, Shintaro, and Ed Sandoval to shoot with us to help get everyone as many photos as possible. It also meant shooting a lot faster than we had originally planned, which made things more of a challenge but in the end resulted in quite a few fun shots. Each of the pictures took 15 minutes or less to shoot and in my case were all shot in front of grey paper except for the Batman, Harley, and Joker shot that we took in front of the studio’s elevator.

Batman: David Rivers
Suicide Squad Harley Quinn: Diana Rivers

[See image gallery at www.bradpassowphoto.com] A lot of people have asked me about the process that goes into creating some of these shots that have a lot of editing involved so I put together this little animation to hit a few of the steps in the process. If I remember right this took about 10 hours from start to finish. The completed version is available in the gallery above.

Ghost Rider, Negan, and Yang https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/02/11/ghost-rider-negan-and-yang/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ghost-rider-negan-and-yang https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/2017/02/11/ghost-rider-negan-and-yang/#respond Sat, 11 Feb 2017 16:00:31 +0000 https://www.bradpassowphoto.com/?p=510 You could almost call this the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Yang is a fun character to shoot, like a lot of anime there is something bright and cheerful even in the fight scenes. Ghost Rider has been a bucket list shoot for me ever since I started shooting cosplayers and is actually one of the characters that drove me to shoot in the first place, and this was my first chance to work with Megan as well. Negan is a great and deep character (especially the comic version) and we had a little fun with him, especially the shot where he is attacking Wolverine, a character Daniel plays as well as anyone.

Negan and Wolverine: Daniel Wise
Yang: Claudia Goeff Houghton
